Stone Swarm

Stone Swarm is an orientation system designed to help people find their way through metro stations.  Crowds of people move together from one place to another in a swarm like behaviour. For the terrazzo tiles, i translated these movements into the number and placement of the stones. At important key points, such as the exit or the start of the escalator, the number of stones is concentrated. Like a swarm, the stones are distributed according to these locations. This means that the stones can be followed intuitively, without having to read or understand the system. The flow of the Pepople can be influenced and the space is structured.
I chose black and white because it has a high contrast and can be read by as many people possible, although the colours can be changed as desired.
Svensk Terrazzo-Teknik was a very important partner with whom I developed a method of influencing the placement of the stones in the terrazzo.
